Once again, it appears that many people may have overreacted to the so-called blizzard this past weekend. The following is a sample of things I saw/heard/watched this weekend:
1. We went to the grocery store Saturday afternoon to get a couple missing ingredients for the lasagna we wanted to make Sunday, since we were going to be "stuck in the house". Looking at the carts of others in the store, you would think the Apocalypse was upon us. People were stocking up on water, TP, and other random things as if they were going to be stuck in their house until April. I remember why we go shopping at 7 in the morning!
2. I have become virtually immune to all local newscasts, since their M.O. these days is to sensationalize everything. But the winner of sensationalizing the snowstorm was the National Weather Service. I have taken a liking to their website as of late (over the Weather Channel) but some of the headlines and comments in their reports were great.
We were told that we were "putting our lives at risk if we traveled on Saturday night or Sunday. This made us immediately leave my mom's house so we could get home with our lives still in our hands! I can't remember the other headlines, but they were really ridiculous and overblown.
3. Shoveling the crap that fell from the sky Saturday night and Sunday was painful. Rain and snow mixed do not lead to good shoveling. It took at least 3 times as long to clear the Sunday snow than the Saturday snow. I would have rather had the 20+ inches they were calling for!
---
All in all, it was another snowstorm that was played out to be more than actually happened, but it did give us an excuse to give the house a good cleaning. It also gave me reason to clear the floor of our basement, but alas it stayed dry!!
